This is an examination of some of the constraints, challenges and the context of the rapidly changing policy and management framework of community health services that aims to bring some of the key problems in these areas to light. The first part of the book deals with policy and management issues and looks at the role of local authorities in care strategies. The book considers the patterns of management in community units and the use of information for effective community management. The second section of the book discusses collaboration between the public and the consumer and considers whether to satisfy one of these groups will satisfy the other. The focus of the book is the 'old' Community Health Services: those transferred to Area Health Authorities from local authorities in the 1974 re organization of the NHS. These diverse services, while grouped together, had little objectively in common, occupying, as they do, a hazy middle ground between hospital and Family Practitioner Services.
