Managing Human Resources

This text helps students identify and deal with the opportunities and challenges managers often encounter. It provides students with an understanding of the fundamental ways in which organizations manage their human resources. Many real companies are analyzed and used as specific examples which students may examine and use to apply what they have learned in a realistic, contemporary situation. The major themes emphasized throughout the text are ethics, partnership, globalization, diversity and total quality management.

Randall S. Schuler is Professor, Human Resource Strategy, Rutgers University. He is also Director, Overseas Credit Programs and Director, Center for Strategic Human Resource Management in the School of Management and Labor Relations. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Michigan State University. He has served on the faculties of Cleveland State University, Penn State University, Ohio State University, University of Maryland, and New York University. His research interests are international human resource management, strategic human resource management, the human resource management function in organizations and the interface of business objectives and human resource objectives. Presently, he serves on the editorial review boards of ten journals and served as editor of the Human Resource Planning journal. He also served as area editor for the Journal of World Business and as co-editor of the Journal of Operations Management. He is past president and board member of the Eastern Academy of Management and board member of the Human Resource Planning Society. He is also a fellow in the American Psychological Association and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. In addition to his academic work, he has conducted numerous executive and management development workshops in the United States, Europe and Australia. Topics cover strategic management, strategic human resource management and international human resource management for State Farm Insurance, Ciba-Geigy, General Electric, IMD, Ohio State University, Maryland Bankers Association, and the Stern School of Business, New York University. He also served as a Faculty Fellow at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management in Washington, D.C.
