Managing IT Professionals in the Internet Age

The nature of information technology work has changed dramatically in the past decade. The rise of the Internet has driven massive shifts in both what IT people are asked to do, and how they are required to do it. The Internet has made possible such far-reaching phenomena as electronic commerce, outsourcing and offshoring, new styles of programming and system development, virtual work, virtual communities, and real-time communications. Managing IT Professionals in the Internet Age explores these impacts, and the ways in which the work life of IT professionals – from the perspectives of both the individual worker, as well as managers – has had to change and adapt to the Internet Age.

Pak Yoong is an associate professor of information systems/e-commerce at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Professor Yoong teaches in the areas of virtual organisation, research methods, and IS leadership. His research, teaching, and consulting experience is in the facilitation of virtual meetings, online communities of practice, online knowledge sharing, mobile collaborations, and human resource development in information technology environments. Sid Huff is a professor of information systems and head of the School of Information Management at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. His research addresses electronic commerce, IS strategy, IT governance, and senior management roles in IS. He has published extensively in the leading information systems journals; he has also written over 50 teaching cases, and is the lead author of Cases in Electronic Commerce, published by Irwin/McGraw-Hill.
