Print on Demand. This book provides a framework for strategic long-range corporate planning, emphasizing critical differences among the phases of planning. It distinguishes between objective setting and programming and budgeting, and among different strategic levels — corporate portfolio strategizing, divisional business strategizing, and functional programming. The thrust of the planning process is to provide a vehicle for making strategic decisions, emphasizing who is supposed to participate in what and when. Extensive examinations of the functioning of planning systems of large, diversified corporations revealed a common underlying problem: an uncertainty about how to formally couple the firm's planning efforts with critical factors and trends in the firm's environment. The author proposes a few steps that might be taken in the planning process to strengthen its usefulness as a vehicle for strategic adaptation to the environment. Better environmental assessment will allow managers to grapple more effectively with the exposure of their strategic positions to various environmental forces, modifying as necessary their approaches towards achieving their objectives. It will also facilitate the efforts to come up with a corporate portfolio strategy with an acceptable environmental risk exposure. The author believes that in order for planning to fulfill its role in a rapidly changing business environment, the company must develop the capability to assess the impact of and react to unexpected environmental developments. The approach the author suggests has two premises: it should not conflict with the mode of planning laid out already, and it must be simple. This book offers an approach that breaks the problem down in an intuitively meaningful way, and indicates how to go about attacking the issue as a process, not a technique. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Strengthen your planning with a practical method to map environmental risk and sharpen strategic response.
This book outlines a simple, intuitive approach to connect environmental factors with the way you plan and execute strategy. It helps you see how predictability and discretionary action shape risk, and how to align your corporate portfolio and divisional plans accordingly.
The method starts with listing key environmental factors and asking two core questions: How well can you predict each factor, and how much discretionary response can you apply? It then classifies factors into a two‑dimensional matrix to guide choices about steering, contingency, anticipatory continue/withdraw, and post‑facto learning. The framework supports better environmental scanning, risk/return planning, and strategic control at both corporate and divisional levels. What you’ll experience
- Guidance to identify factors with the greatest potential impact on your plans
- A clear way to map predictability against discretionary response for each factor
- Practical modes of control to fit different environmental dynamics
- A framework for tracking how strategy quality changes over time

All Forgotten Books titles are printed on demand. The moment an order is submitted, it is automatically transmitted to our distributor and then forwarded to the printer, where it enters production. This process begins within minutes and is entirely automated.

For this reason, we kindly ask that you double-check the title, edition, and your shipping details before placing an order.
If you change your mind after ordering, you are welcome to return the book once it arrives, and a refund will be issued in accordance with AbeBooks’ return policy.
