About this title

Synopsis

This fascinating book, Manchester Buses from the Platform, not only covers the day to day operation of a busy bus garage in the latter half of the 20th century, but also attempts to give the reader an insight into what it was like to work on buses, doing the job for which they were designed, namely, to quote the author’s first regular mate, “To pick up passengers”. All the stories have been experienced by Ron Barton or have been told to him by other busmen. With a wealth of photographs, many never seen before, taken mainly by the author, there are also pictures of artefacts and documents rescued from the dustbin of history. ‘Manchester Buses from the Platform’ is not just an autobiography, but is filled with social history about the way things have changed for ordinary people and observations of what now seems like a different world, populated by a host of unforgettable characters. The story will appeal both to the bus aficionado and to all those interested in the way we lived not so very long ago.
