Manly P. Hall: The Sage of Secret Wisdom

The real Manly P. Hall: the life, the sources, the legend, and the practices behind one of the most influential esoteric teachers of the twentieth century.

At only twenty-seven, Manly P. Hall published The Secret Teachings of All Ages, a vast illustrated study of philosophy, symbolism, religion, mythology, and the Western mystery traditions. The book made his name and helped shape the way generations of readers encountered esoteric philosophy.

But who was the man behind it?

This biography tells Hall’s story clearly and carefully: the largely self-taught young seeker who arrived in Los Angeles in 1919, the creation of The Secret Teachings of All Ages, the founding of the Philosophical Research Society, the building of one of America’s great esoteric libraries, and the long career of lecturing, writing, and teaching that followed.

Unlike many accounts, this book separates the documented life from the legend. Where the record is strong, it follows the evidence. Where popular claims are uncertain or exaggerated, it says so plainly. The result is a more honest and more interesting portrait of Hall: gifted, ambitious, disciplined, controversial, and genuinely remarkable.

This book also returns Hall’s work to its sources. The traditions he explored are presented through older texts published before 1928, with names, dates, translators, and historical context included throughout. There are no vague appeals to “ancient wisdom” and no modern inventions dressed up as tradition.

At the close of each chapter, you will also find one contemplative practice drawn from a named classical or devotional source. These include the evening self-examination of the Pythagoreans, the room set apart in Thomas à Kempis, the discipline of limits from Ptolemy, the meditation on mortality in Plato’s Phaedo, and others. Together, they form a practical ninety-day foundation for readers who want to study Hall’s world not only as history, but as a living discipline.

Inside you will discover:

The making of The Secret Teachings of All Ages and what the great folio actually contains

Hall’s involvement with Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, Hermeticism, and the Western esoteric orders

His treatment of alchemy and astrology, traced back to older sources rather than modern imitations

Atlantis, Egypt, and the lost-civilization traditions, examined with historical honesty

Hall’s thesis on the secret destiny of America, including what is history and what is speculation

The wisdom traditions on death, initiation, and the journey of the soul

Ten source-grounded practices and a ninety-day schedule for beginning the work

This is a book for readers who want the real Manly P. Hall: the achievement, the controversy, the sources, the discipline, and the practical inheritance behind the legend.

Read the life. Study the sources. Take up the practice. Judge for yourself.
