A Manual of Composition and Rhetoric : a Text-Book for Schools and Colleges

"A Manual Of Composition And Rhetoric : A Text-Book For Schools And Colleges" by John Seely Hart is a nineteenth-century classroom manual that treats prose composition and rhetoric as both art and science. It guides teachers and students through a comprehensive repertoire of genres—from letters, diaries, and news to editorials, reviews, essays, treatises, travels, history, biography and memoirs, fiction, and formal discourses—emphasizing invention, organization, and style. The work outlines a two-part framework: Part I, Style, which covers punctuation, capitalization, diction (purity, propriety, and precision), and a systematic treatment of figures and versification; and Part II, Invention, which develops content by exploring objects, transactions, abstract and imaginary topics, personal narratives, and descriptive writing, with abundant exercises and model passages. The pedagogy stresses outlining before writing, progressive complexity, unity, audience adaptation, brevity, and accuracy, complemented by proofreading marks, margin comments, and in-class corrections. It also features a substantial, student-facing guide to the English language, including linguistics and the historical development of English, and is designed for use by teachers and students in schools and colleges.
