A Manual Containing Information Respecting the Growth of the Mulberry Tree: With Suitable Directions for the Culture of Silk

A Manual Containing Information Respecting The Growth Of The Mulberry Tree: With Suitable Directions For The Culture Of Silk by Jonathan Holmes Cobb documents an early American effort to commercialize sericulture. This edition outlines three main parts: Culture of the Mulberry Tree, Rearing Silk Worms, and Reeling and Manufacturing Silk, with an Appendix detailing historical silk culture in the United States. The text advocates cultivating mulberry leaves as the silk-worm food and discusses seed selection, propagation methods (seed sowing, cuttings, layers, and hedges), grafting and pruning, and care of mulberry orchards. It then describes silkworm rearing, egg handling, feeding, molting, disease prevention, cocoon production, and the processing and dyeing of silk. Practical calculations for profitability, including labor, costs, and potential yields per acre, reflect a push to establish silk as a viable domestic industry in Massachusetts and beyond. This work preserves an important snapshot of early American agricultural innovation.
