About this Item
London: J. & A. Churchill, 1886. Second [revised and authoritative] Edition. Octavo (20x15x4cm); vi + 638pp, including appendix and index + 2pp of publisher's prospectuses. Publisher's burgundy cloth boards with blind-stamped borders, medallions, and frames on front and rear panels. Gilt spine lettering. Raw umber coated endpapers. Spine crown and foot and panel edges show cloth erosion, slight bumping, and superficial surface nibbling. Bookseller's ticket ("A.B. Scott, Second-Hand Bookseller, Swanston St., Melbourne") on front pastedown. A well-meaning earlier owner has tried to tighten the inner hinges with glue, front and back, after tearing out, it seems, a card tipped in by its edge at the front hinge; card was not part of the original publication. Despite the repairs, the joints and hinges are solid. Textblock unmarred and unmarked. "Companion of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire," William James Moore (1828-1896) was the leading Anglo medical authority under the Raj, and Honorary Surgeon General to the Viceroy of India. He was an authority on leprosy, opium he was pro-opium and the many ailments that colonializing Brits were subject to on their passages to India. Seller Inventory # 9883
