Although most of this book is devoted to freshwater environments, it is not restricted to these and includes many references to marine environments. It is the result of a combined effort from many authors, but it is not a sequence of individual contributions. Although the basic idea has been to produce a simple outline of techniques already established for primary productivity studies, it is more than a simple preservation of methods. Much emphasis has been given to a critical review of techniques, rather than to a set of standard procedures to be used in all situations.
