In presenting to the profession and students of medicine the third edition of this work the author wishes gratefully to acknowledge the cordial reception that was accorded the last edition. Although over twice the size of the first edition, the second was exhausted in nearly the same length of time; it appeared late in the autumn of 1897 and was exhausted in the following year.

The pressure of other duties rendered it impossible for the author to give the work the revision that seemed necessary, and therefore it has been out of print for nearly two years. During that time the author has occupied his spare moments in revising, rewriting, and rearranging the subject-matter. A number of the old illustrations have been replaced by new, and many original drawings have been added.
