A Manual of Practical Therapeutics: Considered Chiefly With Reference to Articles of the Materia Medica

A Manual Of Practical Therapeutics: Considered Chiefly With Reference To Articles Of The Materia Medica by Edward John Waring presents a late-19th-century medical reference that serves as a bridge between theory and bedside practice. The excerpt describes a dense, alphabetized index of diseases and their traditional remedies, organized more like a pharmacopoeial ledger than a modern diagnostic manual. Entries enumerate internal medicines, antidotes, external applications, injections, enemas, and surgical or physical therapies, with era-specific practices such as bloodletting, leeches, blisters, Turkish baths, cauterization, and numerous remedies per condition. The text includes front matter, Preface, Introduction, and opens Part First: Articles of the Materia Medica, signaling a focus on materia medica and therapeutics rather than purely pathologic classifications. Core guidance emphasizes individualized therapy, knowledge of medicine properties, drug interactions, dose titration, and the body's natural healing tendencies (vis medicatrix naturae). The material covers iron and mercury preparations, alkaloids, acids, astringents, demulcents, turpentine, tannins, and botanical agents, with practical dosing, cautions, and historical authorities, reflecting the Victorian medical landscape in India and Britain.
