Add to basketMANUSCRIPT. Manuscript Recipe Book [Two]. England: 1851. Full Description: [COOKERY] Manuscript Recipe Book. [England, n.d.c.a. 1851-1875]. Two nineteenth-century manuscript cookbooks. The First: small quarto (9 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches; 235 x 188 mm). With two leaves of Index and approximately 160 recipes on 61 numbered pages and 29 unnumbered pages. Pages filled with neat manuscript recipes in multiple hands. A few more manuscript recipes laid in. Two additional newspaper clippings tipped in. Additionally there are two pages entitled "Analysis of Water from our Cistern at the Kitchen Fire", for a Mr Hoyland, Western Bank, Sheffield, and dated 29 March 1851, which declares it "quite free from lead or other injurious impregnation". Quarter brown paper over tartan boards. Some repairs to spine. A few light spots and a bit of minor soiling, but overall internally very clean, particularly for a cookbook. Containing recipes such as "Dr Crowthers' Pudding for an Invalid", "Lemon Solid", "Ackworth School Yeast", "Scent Pot", "Treacle Parkin", "Blacking", "Strengthening Jelly", "To make Shoes Water-Proof", "Jenny Lind Pudding", "Directions for keeping Tile Pavement clean, 2 July 1867", "Welcome Guest Pudding", "Eye Water", "Burns and "scalds", many attributed to "Mrs Speight", "Mrs Woollen", and "Mrs Micklethwait". The Second: Small quarto (9 x 7 inches; 226 x 180 mm). Dated 1875 on front board and "July 1875" on inside front cover in manuscript. About 40 pages of receipts including in a few hand. Mostly in ink and a few in pencil. A two-page index is written in upside-down at the end. There are numerous blank pages as well. Quarter green paper over marbled boards. Paper label on front board. Rubbing and chipping to boards. Some dampstaining and soiling. Still very good. Recipes include "Shrewsbury Cakes", "Manchester Pudding", "Jam Sandwiches", "Recipe for a Cough" etc., many attributed to "Miss Bell", and "Mrs E. Lloyd". HBS 69589. $1,750.
