Original flexible cloth, ruled in blind.Title stamped in gilt on front cover. Marbled edges. Corners a bit worn. Approximately [75] pages, with about [32] pages containing manuscript entries. Selling Cram Maps (and more) in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and NebraskaMap Agent's Canvassing BookFascinating map salesman's book, with manuscript entries listing the names of subscribers who were ordering various works published by George Cram in 1881. The agent's name is inscribed on the back free endpaper: "James S. Swearingen / Ag't / Sep. 17th 1881 / Waseca & Waterville Minn." Swearingen worked as a Canvassing Agent under the General Agent John Dipon.The first page bears the printed heading:We, the following Subscribers for CRAM's CELEBRATED MAPS, agree to take Map or Maps specified opposite our names, paying for the same at prices there also stated, on delivery.Swearingen was active in many towns throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin and even made a few sales in Iowa and Nebraska, including Waseca, New Richmond, Meridan, Janesville, Otisco, Waterville, Okaman, Elysian, Covington, Sioux City, Fremont, McCook, Omaha, Schuyler, among other places. Includes several pages containing names of purchasers (including many female customers, perhaps schoolteachers), as well as the items purchased. In addition to maps, Swearingen sold prints of the Last Supper and examples of Young's Geography.The tradition in America of agents selling geographical material for the major map publishers dates back to well before the Civil War. The information recorded by traveling canvassers in their order booklets offers information on map buyers, pricing and occasionally the existence of unusual items not typically associated with the publisher.This volume is evidence of a map seller's remarkably active business in small town midwestern America.Rarity19th-century American map sellers' canvassing books are extremely rare in the market.…
