This eye-catching map of the Arizona Territory was published anonymously in 1884 - nearly 3 decades before statehood (1912). Descriptive text on the verso indicates it was likely issued as part of an atlas or geography textbook. Engraved toponyms identify a fascinating variety of settlements (note the capital at Prescott), natural resources, geographic features, and other locations of interest. Native American villages and reservations are labeled, along with the Wild West town of Tombstone and a handful of frontier forts. Two railroad lines - the Atlantic & Pacific (Sante Fe) and Southern Pacific - can be seen bisecting the state in the north and the south. A neat snapshot of the Grand Canyon State shortly before a copper boom brought additional wealth and settlement. The text on the verso provides further contemporary information. Of particular interest are the census numbers taken from 1880 - over, 1,500 Chinese (and 2 Japanese) were counted, the majority of which were likely workers on the aforementioned railroads. Sheet Width (in) 6.9 Sheet Height (in) 9.9 Condition Description Trimmed margins show faint spotting and light soiling, consistent with age. Very good to near fine overall.
