About this Item

The alliance between the British and Dutch had been established by the Glorious Revolution in 1688, which brought both empires under a Protestant crown. Despite the friendly relationship, Dutch global economic influence began to wane in the 18th century, often supplanted by British merchant interests. This map presciently reflects contemporary concerns about the Dutch in South Africa, and was published in London as part of the Gentleman's Magazine in 1755. It reflects surveys performed around the Cape by the French astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille in 1752 (hence the date). The image includes the points of triangulation used by the surveyor, names various mountain peaks and settlements (including Constantia and Stellenbosch), and depicts topography pictorially. Sheet Height (in) 8.25 Condition A- Faintly toned around the outer edges, consistent with age, and a bit of wrinkling in the lower left corner, but in near fine condition overall.
