About this Item

This is an extremely rare wall map of a county in northeastern Iowa along the Mississippi River. Restored, with varnish removed, modern linen backing. Areas of loss, particularly much of the town of Giard and a much smaller area of the Town of Monona along the northern border of the county, have been sympathetically infilled without reproduction of the printed areas. There are also smaller areas where there is minor loss from earlier cracking. There has been no facsimile work done in these areas as no on-line images of this map have been located. This map was reprinted in 1983 along with 3 Clayton County atlases, (LCCNL 84-675177) but even this book is quite rare (OCLC shows 6 copies). Land owners identified. 20 views of buildings at the right side. Lithographed by N. Friend of Philadelphia. OCLC 8064273 locates only the Iowa State Historical Society holding, but does not indicate that it is a photocopy as indicated by Printed Maps of the Midwest 8-0252. Printed Maps gives the size of the map as 78-87 cm, which likely is the size of the photocopy, reduced from the original.
