Map. Lithograph. 25" x 31.25". Shows two tears that extend into the margin near where map is affixed to binding. Otherwise in very good condition. Book. Illustrated. 211 pages. 8vo, stamped cloth covered boards, corners slightly bumped. First fly leaf inscribed with ink. Trenton: The True American, 1857. A very good copy. Includes an official printed letter from Viele about his triangulation methods. Egbert L. Viele (1825-1902) served in the Civil War before becoming a civil engineer and mapmaker, becoming the chief engineer of Central Park and developing plans for the first subway system. His namesake map is a fascinating part of the history of mapping.
