An uncolored promotional map, silked with minor chips at some previous fold junctions, with text on reverse, published by the Canadian Department of Agriculture and Public Works. Shows to Lake Superior, with an inset map of the eastern section of Lake Superior. This was designed for distribution to potential emigrants to largely unsettled lands between the Ottawa River and Georgian Bay in central Ontario. At this time, only a few years after Confederation, the northern areas of Ontario above the Ottawa River were still undeveloped. At the right of the map is a listing of 10 Free Grant Agencies, the towns that comprised them, and the government agent for each. The verso is text promoting the area. This text makes clear that this piece was targeted at potential emigrants from the United Kingdom, with information specific to those potential settlers. The lands being offered were opened for settlement by the Free Grant and Homestead Act of 1868.
