About this Item
The detailed street plan of Seattle was drawn by Irvina M. Smith and published by the Newman-Burrows Co., Inc. in 1945. Bus lines are highlighted in red, while parks, playgrounds, and golf courses are colored in soft pink. The Lake Washington Pontoon Bridge (completed in 1940) connects the city to Mercer Island. A list of several Federal Housing Projects, necessary to home the swell of war workers, is provided at the bottom of the page, along with Facilities for Members of Armed Forces and Maritime Service. Nearby, a small map showing Seattle's postal sections helps facilitate the timely delivery of mail. Seattle exploded in population during World War II, when the city ranked in the top three in the nation in war contracts per capita. Aircraft and ship production, lumber, and canning provisions were among the major industries that propelled growth and development. Sheet Width (in) 14.5 Sheet Height (in) 25 Condition Description Map folded into 16 panels, as issued. Moderate wear along folds and a strip of dark toning in the center left. Nearby are several manuscript annotations. Old cellophane tape on the verso (otherwise blank) has discolored a spot in the upper center. Between fair and good condition overall.
