Partially colored map in very good condition, mended split along vertical folds with no loss. State backgrounds are tinted, with some features printed in red. This is among the earliest, if not the earliest, map which shows West Virginia as a state, it having been admitted to the Union on July 1, 1863. Lithographed by Charles Krebs, an early pioneer in printed color. Compiled by W. L. Nicholson. Stephenson 481.6: "General map of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and southern Pennsylvania showing cities and towns, roads, rivers, and relief by hachures. The map is overprinted in red to indicate railroads, the state name 'West Virginia', and concentric circles centered on Richmond. Circles are at intervals of ten miles. A table of 'Distances by Rail Roads' appears below the map title. A second state of this map was issued, and dated, in August, 1863. Seller Inventory # m01945
