In 1967 he started his long employment with Runner's World, where he eventually worked his way up to senior editor. In addition, he writes and produces a monthly newsletter called Running Commentary and is an adjunct assistant professor of journalism at the University of Oregon.
Henderson is a former executive director of the International Runners Committee, which was instrumental in placing a women's marathon in the Olympics.
