À 37 ans, il écrit une histoire à l'homme que deviendra son fils Louis. Et si c'était vrai , publié en 2000 aux Éditions Robert Laffont, connait un succès immédiat. Peu avant la sortie du roman, Steven Spielberg (DreamWorks) en acquiert les droits d'adaptation cinématographique : Just Like Heaven , avec Reese Whitherspoon et Mark Ruffalo, s'est classé premier du box-office américain à sa sortie en 2005.
Depuis Et si c'était vrai , Marc Levy a écrit 20 romans, qui figurent dès leur parution en tête des ventes annuelles en France et connaissent un succès international.
Marc Levy a réalisé un court métrage, La Lettre de Nabila , pour Amnesty International, et a également écrit des chansons pour différents artistes, dont Johnny Hallyday.
Son roman Sept jours pour une éternité a été adapté en bande dessinée par Corbeyran et Espé. Les Enfants de la liberté a été adapté en bande dessinée par Alain Grand.
Marc Levy, qui a toujours rêvé d'écrire pour la jeunesse, a adapté son best-seller Le Voleur d'ombres avec l'illustrateur Fred Bernard (triple Goncourt Jeunesse).
