About the Author
Àngel Guimerà (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 1845?Barcelona, 1924) constitueix, junt amb Verdaguer i Narcís Oller, la tríada sobre la qual es basa la Renaixença de les lletres catalanes. Verdaguer destacà sobretot en la poesia; Oller, en la narrativa, i Guimerà, en el camp del teatre, en què no només van posar al dia la literatura catalana sinó que la van situar en el món. Mar i Cel, Maria Rosa, La filla del mar i, en especial, Terra baixa són les obres més conegudes del Guimerà dramaturg: van ser molt populars en la seva època i, cent anys més tard, encara es continuen representant. Però Guimerà va ser també un poeta de prestigi i un home molt influent i respectat en els cercles polítics catalanistes, pel seu decidit compromís amb la pàtria i amb la llengua que ell havia escollit..
