Line illustrations by Hookway Cowles.Those of a certain age will remember ?King Solomon?s Mines? and ?She? from their childhood.Sir Henry Rider Haggard wrote late Victorian and Edwardian ?Boy?s Own? imperialist adventure stories of the sort that continued to sell well during the fifties and sixties of the last century, but which very much fell out of favour subsequently. ?Politically correct? they never were; and they contain many passages that modern readers would rightly consider offensive.However, given a hefty dose of historical perspective, one can still appreciate the skill with which they were written, and understand why they were so hugely popular in their day.Many of his stories featured a gung-ho hunter called Allan Quatermaine, and this novel is no exception. It?s about the hunter?s first great love, Marie Marais. It?s as much a romance as it is an adventure story about the Boers of South Africa, and it ends sadly, as a result of trickery and deceit. To say more would spoil the plot.
