Item description from seller

Hard back binding in publisher's original Scottish Mauchline ware Gordon tartan binding, burgundy leather spine divided into six panels, gilt lettered in the second over red leather label, centre tools to the others, illustration of Scott Monument in center cameo to the front board (completed in Edinburgh in 1846), water-marked cream silk lining papers, all page edges gilt with gauffered diamond lozenge and centre dot pattern, gilt dentelles. 8vo. 8¼'' x 5½''. Contains tissue guarded frontispiece and title vignette, 408 pp with 80 engravings on wood from drawings by Birket Foster and John Gilbert throughout. Mauchline ware bindings name comes from Smith's boxware factory at Mauchline in Ayrshire which were made from thin wooden boards (often sycamore) decorated with tartan or pictorial designs, heavily varnished, and attached to the text block by a leather spine. Here the tartan is designated 'Gordon' in small gold type at the top of the front cover. End papers cracked, rubbing to the Mauchline boards, soiling to the lining papers, rubbing to the high points of leather spine. Customs duty applies for orders shipped into the EU from outside the EU, Delivered Duty Paid (DDP), our shipping price includes DDP. Member of the P.B.F.A. NINETEENTH CENTURY.…
