Gr 4-6--Using a simple design, these series entries fulfill the dual purpose stated on the covers: to help readers "discover other cultures" and "make beautiful things." Each begins with a short explanation of the history of the featured craft plus a list of materials. Every project is presented clearly on a two-page spread along with information; a map of the country of origin; a fine, full-color photograph of the original artifact; and step-by-step illustrations that explain how to make a similar item. Bright colors and an uncluttered format make the books inviting and create a sense of enthusiasm for what are, in many instances, complicated activities. Masks offers an interesting variety of cultures and complexity, from the relatively simple Andean mask to the Yoruba ancestor mask, complete with figures perched atop it. Many of the Puppets require sewing, working with papier-mache, or making joints, but despite the challenges, youngsters can experience impressive results. For those looking for crafts requiring an investment of time, but that promise exciting results, these titles will fit the bill nicely.
