He has returned. And this time, there will be no mercy.
Eighteen years ago, Robur the Conqueror terrorized the world aboard his aerial ship Albatross, demonstrating technological superiority that rendered all opposition futile. He vanished after that demonstration, believed dead or retired to some remote corner of the world.
Now he's back. And he has built something worse.
The Terror defies every category. It races across American roads at 150 miles per hour—impossible speed for 1904. It appears as submarine in coastal waters. It transforms into aircraft and flies with maneuverability beyond any known flying machine. It is car, boat, submarine, and airplane simultaneously—the ultimate vehicle, capable of operating in any domain, unstoppable by any force.
And Robur has gone completely mad with power.
He calls himself "Master of the World." He recognizes no governmental authority, acknowledges no law, answers to no power beyond his own will. When John Strock, a federal investigator, confronts him, Robur's response is explicit: "I am accountable to no one. I go where I please. I do as I please. The whole world is mine to command."
As the Terror streaks across America—appearing, vanishing, demonstrating capabilities that make military response futile—Strock realizes the terrifying truth: advanced technology in the hands of a single megalomaniac renders democratic authority meaningless. Robur can strike anywhere, retreat to his inaccessible mountain fortress, and laugh at any attempt to constrain him. He has achieved what tyrants throughout history have dreamed: power beyond all human opposition.
Jules Verne wrote Master of the World in 1904, in the final months of his life (he died March 1905, shortly after publication). It stands as his darkest and most prophetic work—the bitter conclusion to a career that once celebrated technological progress with unbounded optimism. Where his early science fiction imagined submarines and moon voyages opening new frontiers, this final novel imagines technology as instrument of domination and terror, wielded by a madman who recognizes no limits.
The novel's resolution is deliberately unsatisfying: Robur is not defeated by human ingenuity or governmental authority. He destroys himself accidentally when lightning strikes the Terror during a storm. Nature eliminates the threat that human power could not touch—a grim message about our inability to control the forces we unleash.
Contemporary critics found it depressing and hasty, a poor ending to Verne's illustrious career. Modern readers will recognize it as chillingly prescient—a vision of technological power outpacing democratic control, of individuals wielding capabilities that render governmental authority impotent, of survival depending on fortune rather than wisdom.
Written in an age of tech billionaires who operate beyond effective regulation, of surveillance capabilities that transcend national boundaries, of autonomous weapons and AI systems developing faster than governance structures, Verne's final warning resonates with disturbing accuracy.
From the author of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea—the nightmare vision of what happens when advanced technology serves a single man's will to power, and society can only watch helplessly as the Master of the World declares himself above all human law.
