Mastering Complex Text Using Multiple Reading Sources, Grade 2

Equip students with the skills they need to synthesize information from a variety of different text types. Each unit provides multiple text sources that are presented in the following formats, genres, and text types:

• fiction
• nonfiction
• poetry
• historical fiction
• science fiction
• famous quotations
• dictionary definitions
• illustrations, diagrams, charts, timelines, and graphs 
• recipes
• maps
• and more

The sources feature text that is easy to understand and full of high-interest information in the areas of science, language, social studies, and everyday life. Within each unit, students must combine the related information from these sources in order to answer multiple-choice questions; respond to writing prompts; complete diagrams, charts, or graphs; and perform other tasks. In doing this, students build and practice the skills needed to analyze and understand complex text:

• Drawing information from multiple sources.
• Using higher-order thinking skills to answer questions
• Locating information that fits a specific criteria.
• Integrating information from several texts in order to write knowledgeably about a subject.
