Equip students with the skills they need to synthesize information from a variety of different text types. Each unit provides multiple text sources that are presented in the following formats, genres, and text types:
- fiction
- nonfiction
- poetry
- historical fiction
- science fiction
- famous quotations
- dictionary definitions
- illustrations, diagrams, charts, timelines, and graphs
- recipes
- maps
- and more
The sources feature text that is full of high-interest information in the areas of science, language, social studies, and everyday life. Within each unit, students must combine the related information from these sources in order to answer multiple-choice questions; respond to writing prompts; complete diagrams, charts, or graphs; and perform other tasks. In doing this, students build and practice the skills needed to analyze and understand complex text:
- Drawing information from multiple sources.
- Using higher-order thinking skills to answer questions
- Locating information that fits a specific criteria.
- Integrating information from several texts in order to write knowledgeably about a subject.
