About this title

Synopsis

Make NT 4 "play nice" with Novell and IBM-based systems, as you incorporate into existing enterprise networks. Now in its third edition, this classic best-selling handbook has been extensively revised and expanded to offer undocumented, exclusive solutions to the problems of a multi-vendor world. Based on Mark Minasi's wildly popular seminars (which run $800 per person), the book offers frank, irreverent, readable discussions of essential operations and issues, including a huge, newly revised section on NT and TCP/IP. Remember, if you call Microsoft with just one NT question, they'll charge you $150! If this book answers just one of your questions, you've saved $100.

Review

This comprehensive guide to Windows NT Server is both a manual for the operating system's features and an implementation tool for real-world use. In this sixth edition, author Mark Minasi builds on an already mature work by adding numerous new topics.

The first part of the book is an excellent overview of Windows NT Server and key Microsoft technology and terminology pertaining to the enterprise. The first chapters cover the architecture, network protocols, domains, workgroups, layered drivers, and more. The second part, consisting of three lengthy chapters, addresses installation and configuration. Rather than merely address the key steps, Minasi presents information about important related topics such as the redundant array of independent disks (RAID) for fault tolerance and the Windows NT registry.

Part three consists of over 400 pages of well-organized discussion on administration; everything from user management to interfacing with Macintoshes and working with the Windows Terminal Server is covered in detail. Throughout the book, Minasi presents useful sidebars that answer common questions about how to perform specific tasks.

The final seven chapters cover enterprise issues such as interconnecting Novell NetWare networks, troubleshooting, optimization, disaster recovery, Remote Access Services (RAS), and Internet Information Server (IIS). These sections address advanced issues and complete the book.

Whether you're looking for a guide to learning Windows NT Server or something to bail you out in the field, this definitive work is an excellent choice. --Stephen W. Plain
