The Mat Never Ends: Honor Beyond the Steps

The Mat Never Ends: Honor Beyond the Steps

Perfection was not optional at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It was the standard.

In The Mat Never Ends, former Sentinel SSG (R) Joseph L. Hull, LCSW, shares his powerful journey guarding one of America’s most sacred shrines. From endless inspections and sleepless nights in the quarters to walking the mat in snowstorms, blistering heat, and absolute silence, Hull reveals the discipline, honor, and sacrifice required to earn the Tomb Guard Identification Badge—one of the rarest in the U.S. Army.

But this memoir is not only about marble plazas and sharp heel clicks. It is about the Unknown Soldiers—their sacrifice, their silence, and the unbroken vigil that honors them. With vivid detail and raw honesty, Hull shows how the lessons of the Tomb shaped his life far beyond Arlington: in combat, in leadership, in fatherhood, and in the quiet work of healing as a therapist.

This is a story of:

• Honor and sacrifice — lived out step by twenty-one step.

• Brotherhood and resilience — forged in storms, silence, and shared standards.

• Legacy and devotion — proving that some duties never end, even when the walk is over.

For anyone who has ever wondered what it truly means to serve, to sacrifice, and to carry forward a standard greater than yourself, The Mat Never Ends is a deeply human story of devotion to those who gave everything—including their names.

Because guarding the Tomb is not about recognition.

It is about remembrance.

And the watch never truly ends.
