Most of the material, which dates between 1985 and 1995, relates to the Connecticut River Powwow Society and their annual Powwows. There are numerous duplicates. Membership in the Society does not appear to have been large. We don't know how many of the members were Native Americans. This material belonged to a deceased member from East Haven who was not a Native American but was a cigar smoker. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe gained federal recognition as a tribe in 1983 which was 10 years after Elizabeth George, the last member of the tribe then living on the reservation, died. The tribe, with financial backers, opened a high stakes bingo parlor in 1986 and their casino in 1992. The Mohegan Tribe received federal recognition in 1994 and opened their casino in 1996. The Bureau of Indian Affairs denied recognition to the Golden Hill Paugussett tribe in 1996, a decision which was affirmed in 2004. The federal government briefly recognized two other Connecticut tribes but withdrew recognition in both instances in 2005.
