"Math Lessons for Elementary Grades" is, as its name indicates, a manual for teaching mathematics in the elementary grades. If you master all the math in this book, you have all the math you need for practical purposes, for life! Dorothy Harrar taught in the first Waldorf school in North America for many years and had a genius for bringing to life and to the experience of children, math concepts both simple and complex. Number patterns, the qualities of numbers, the geometry of multiplication tables, business math skills, are all woven together to build experiential math ideas in a visible and practical way. Imaginative stories, clear pictures, practices in movement to illuminate the truth about numbers are all part of this ingenious little book! A good teacher would never lead a child to abstractions before allowing the child to experience the facts behind the abstractions first. This book helps bring those experiences alive in active arithmetic.

Dorothy Harrer was one of the key teachers at the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City in the middle of the last century. She and her husband founded Camp Glenbrook in New Hampshire, their country farm-turned camp still used today by teachers and children.
