Binding of rust colored full cloth with brown title panel on spine, gilt titled. Generally clean with whitish line an inch long and three small whitish spots on the front panel. Bottom edges rubbed, scuffed. Tight and solid. Front endpaper has a blue line marking something out. Pages are clean and unmarked, no highlighting or underlining. Jacket is not clipped, clean on front, greyish cast to white on back, wear to extremities, chipping of spine head and upper front edge. A comparative method is used in this study of Victorian England, with Arnold the spokesman for humanism and Mill the spokesman for liberalism, although they shared many convictions in common. They were most concerned with the preservation of humanistic values in a free and democratic society which they saw coming. A very interesting historical study, with many of the problems Mill and Arnold were concerned with remain unsolved today. 313 pages. 9 x 6 inches. ColumbIa University Press, New York, 1966.
