Maufra did not become a full time painter until 1890, having discovered the work of the Impressionists and under the encouragement of his friends. He was the first painter to take up residence in the Bateau-Lavoir, a famous residence for artists in Paris. His style often incorporated many of the techniques du jour, including impressionism and pointillism. He was primarily a painter of landscapes and marine scenes. This work is full of illustrations displaying his work, including many of his sketches. In the original pictorial card covers, and with the original tissue wrapper. Externally with a little general wear but remarkably sound for its age. The tissue wrapper is intact only at the rear, and is chipped with some moderate loss along the spine. The front part of the tissue wrap has become detached from the rear part, and is inserted between the front cover and front free endpaper. Internally, age-toned towards the edges and lightly spotted at the front and rear as usual. The binding is loosening in places, particularly between the half-title and page 2. Very Good.
