Max Reinhardt (9 septembre 1873 pr�s de Vienne – 30 octobre 1943 � New York), de son vrai nom Max Goldmann, est un metteur en sc�ne de th��tre autrichien, puis am�ricain.

De 1902 jusqu’� l’arriv�e des nazis au pouvoir, en 1933, il r�alise des mises en sc�ne pour divers th��tres berlinois. Il dirige le c�l�bre cabaret satirique Schall und Rauch avec la complicit� du po�te Christian Morgenstern. De 1905 � 1930, il dirige �galement le Deutsches Theater � Berlin ; de 1915 � 1918, il fut le premier intendant de la Volksb�hne am B�lowplatz (aujourd’hui Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz) et, de 1924 � 1933, du th��tre de Josefstadt � Vienne. Par des mises en sc�nes pleines de puissance et une interaction pr�cise entre la sc�nographie, la langue, la musique et la danse, Reinhardt donne un nouvel essor au th��tre allemand. En 1920, il fonde le Festival de Salzburg avec Richard Strauss et Hugo von Hofmannsthal.

Apr�s la prise de pouvoir des nazis, il s’exile en Grande-Bretagne en 1938, puis aux �tats-Unis o� il conna�t un grand succ�s notamment gr�ce � son adaptation au cin�ma du Songe d’une nuit d’�t� de Shakespeare.
