Kieth says many readers of his kaleidoscopically dazzling The Maxx say they don't get it. The third installment of The Maxx graphic-novel series winds up showing why it's so befuddling, for a flashback in it represents Maxx, whose purple muscle suit had masked what seemed to be an insecure adolescent, as a street bum whom the Maxx's curvaceous inamorata (he hopes), Julie, ran down with the flaming-red convertible she got for college. Well, maybe it ain't so, or is so in a more complicated way that shall be revealed. Meanwhile, Julie's back from running away, massively pregnant; Maxx and friend Sarah think she has been a slut. Then Sarah is mistakenly busted and nearly eaten by an isz in jail. And in The Maxx's alternate reality, the Outback, Maxx and the Leopard Queen, who looks a lot like Julie, are saving the universe. "I forgot how much I hate saving the universe," Maxx sighs. Devotees of this wonderful series that is more loose ends than plot will, however, love it. Ray Olson
