A Means of Grace

Emmy Marryat is determined to go home. Her English friends think she's crazy to go back after what happened, crazy to expect to find the same country, the same city, the same people. But she is still receiving letters from the ghosts of that country and so return to it - and them - she does.

Emmy Marryat is a concert singer who travels often from her home in England to her adopted home, a Slavic country in Europe where her friends the Ivanescu family live. As the Red Menace closes in about them, Emmy's visits turn from pleasure trips to threatening encounters. Although Marie McCarthy has a pleasant storytelling voice, her manner of reading doesn't alter with the change of action. Where there is trepidation in the text, there is none in her presentation. Her placid reading excuses the indecencies of the police state. J.P. © AudioFile 2000, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
