The Measure of Alignment (Velkyn’s Hollow)

The council gave them thirty days to test a household. It never considered that the life built inside it might belong only to them.

Recorder Seren Talven believes language should say exactly what it has the authority to claim. Senior archivist Calder Rowan has devoted his career to building systems capable of protecting what people choose to keep private. When Velkyn’s Hollow selects them for a voluntary household experiment—separate bedrooms, independent keys, scheduled reviews, and magical conductors designed to register Recognition—they enter for reasons neither intends to call romantic.

That restraint does not last.

Desire arrives quickly, followed by shared meals, private jokes, difficult honesty, and the startling comfort of hearing one particular key turn in the door. The conductors remain silent, but Seren and Calder begin choosing each other without waiting for magic or civic permission.

Beyond House Rowan East, the experiment’s safeguards are already failing someone else. A private record Seren certified becomes evidence in a coercive household decision, while an inherited archive route Calder approved allows information to travel beyond its original purpose. As the consequences spread through homes, work, grief, and the institutions they trusted, Seren and Calder must decide what belongs in the public record, what remains theirs, and how to build a future no council can interpret for them.

The Measure of Alignment is an adult fantasy romance featuring competent protagonists, a voluntary shared-house experiment, fast attraction, he-falls-first tenderness, open-door intimacy, chosen home, no third-act breakup, and a complete happily ever after.

Velkyn’s Hollow is a sequential series and should be read in order, beginning with The Rite of Recognition.
