Grade 3-6-- Lye introduces all manner of globes and maps. Scales, latitude and longitude lines, symbols, varieties, grid locations, map making, and projections are discussed in the double-page topic treatments. Although the distortion problem associated with the commonly used Mercator projection is mentioned, more realistic projections such as Peters's and Robinson's are not included. The hands-on projects such as making a scale drawing of a city lot, a treasure map, and a model of a mountain can be used for both individual and class activities. The full-color photographs and drawings are informative enough to make this title useful for younger children even though the detailed text is more suitable for intermediate students.
