Measuring and Maps (Hands on Science S on Science)

Discusses the science of geography as measured by globes, maps, latitude, longitude, and map symbols, and presents related projects

Grade 3-6-- Lye introduces all manner of globes and maps. Scales, latitude and longitude lines, symbols, varieties, grid locations, map making, and projections are discussed in the double-page topic treatments. Although the distortion problem associated with the commonly used Mercator projection is mentioned, more realistic projections such as Peters's and Robinson's are not included. The hands-on projects such as making a scale drawing of a city lot, a treasure map, and a model of a mountain can be used for both individual and class activities. The full-color photographs and drawings are informative enough to make this title useful for younger children even though the detailed text is more suitable for intermediate students. This would be a useful next step after the Knowltons' Maps and Globes (Crowell, 1985) and Hartman's As the Crow Flies (Bradbury, 1991). --Eunice Weech, M. L. King Elementary School, Urbana, IL
