Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is an engineering discipline that involves the application of principles of Physics for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It requires a solid understanding of key concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics and energy. Mechanical engineers use these principles in the design and analysis of manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, aircraft, heating and cooling systems, watercraft, motor vehicles, medical devices and more.

The book Mechanical Engineering is divided into three parts. Part A provides fundamental concepts relating to Mechanical Engineering and definitions of various terms related to this field. Part B studies two-dimensional force systems and analyses. Explanation of basic concepts of force, mass, space and laws of motion is followed by analyses of Varignons Theorem and Force-Couple systems. Exclusive chapters on friction and belt friction have been included to study different mechanisms of friction.

Part C concentrates on beams, trusses, frames, stresses and shafts. An exclusive chapter has been devoted to the study of centre of gravity explaining centroids of plane geometrical figures like triangle, circle, trapezium, cylinder, sphere, cone, rod, etc.

Rasheed Ahmed Khan is Professor, Mechanical Engineering Dept., Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia. He did his Ph.D. on Analysis and Synthesis of Mechanisms. He also served as Professor and Dean, Faculty of Engg. & Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia. He has a brilliant academic record throughout his career. He has wide experience in the field of research and teaching. He was Assistant Professor at Al-Anbar University, Ramadi, Iraq, for a short stint of one year. He has over 85 research papers to his credit published in national and international journals of repute. He has attended a large number of seminars and conferences. He has guided more than ten Ph.D. scholars.

Dr. Rasheed has been nominated as International Educator of the Year 2006 by International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England. He has been on the expert panel of many universities, state public service commissions, UPSC, AICTE, and UGC.

Ali Hasan, M.E., Ph.D., is Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering Department, Jamia Millia Islamia. He was Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering Department, Indraprastha Engineering College, Ghaziabad. He has attended many seminars and conferences. He has published papers in several national and international journals. Dr. Hasan is a Corporate Member of the Institution of Engineers. He is a Life Member of Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE).

Ravinder Kumar Anand, B.E., M. Tech. and M.B.A., is Assistant Professor at Indraprastha Engineering College, Ghaziabad. He was Lecturer at National Institute of Technical Education, Chandigarh. He also served as Maintenance Engineer for five years before starting his career in teaching. His areas of interest are: Production Technology, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Materials Science and ISO-9000. He has accomplished many projects including industrial project related to Inventory Control.
