This book presents the basic concepts for the mathematical modeling of classical solid and fluid continuous media. It consists of eight chapters treating, Cartesian tensors, the kinematics, and dynamics of a continuous medium, thermodynamics, constitutive equations of classical Newtonian fluids and elastic solids, introduction to the linear theory of elasticity as well as Newtonian fluid mechanics. In each case, simple application examples provide analytical solutions that illustrate the power of modeling using continuum mechanics principles. Appendices give the necessary additions to follow the work and represent the field equations in cylindrical and spherical coordinate systems.

Each chapter proposes a series of exercises and suggestions for their solution is also provided. Clear and educational, this book is intended for engineering and physics students who want to learn the basic principles of continuum mechanics. About the Authors

Michel Deville, ing�nieur civil �lectricien-m�canicien dipl�m� de l'Universit� Catholique de Louvain en 1968, a soutenu sa th�se de doctorat sur un sujet relatif � l'int�gration num�rique des �quations de Navier-Stokes. Apr�s un s�jour au d�partement de math�matiques du Massachusetts Institute of Technology, il poursuit sa carri�re acad�mique � l'Unit� de M�canique Appliqu�e de l'UCL jusqu'en 1993. Ses travaux portent sur les m�thodes spectrales, la mod�lisation de la turbulence et la simulation num�rique des grandes structures. Ces techniques sont appliqu�es � un large spectre d'applications qui couvrent le g�nie m�dical, la simulation directe d'�coulements incompressibles et plus r�cemment, les fluides non newtoniens.

John Botsis obtient le dipl�me d'ing�nieur civil � l'Universit� de Patras, Gr�ce, en 1979. Il continue sa formation au �Case Institute of Technology� � Cleveland, Etats-Unis, o� il obtient son doctorat �s sciences en 1984. Apr�s deux ans pass�s au centre de recherche pour la d�fense nationale � Ath�nes, il est nomm� professeur assistant au d�partement de g�nie civil et des mat�riaux de l'Universit� de l'Illois � Chicago, puis associ� en 1991 et ordinaire en 1995. En 1996 il est nomm� professeur de m�canique des solides et des structures � l'EPFL. Son enseignement et sa recherche couvrent la m�canique des structures, la m�canique de la rupture et la fatigue de divers mat�riaux tels que les tissus vivants, les polym�res, les m�taux et les composites en vue d'applications industrielles et m�dicales. John Botsis s'int�resse �galement au d�veloppement et � l'utilisation de m�thodes optiques pour l'�tude du comportement des mat�riaux et des structures.
