About this title

Synopsis:

This book considers the origins of the Tractatus in Neo-Kantian philosophy of science, above all the work of Hermann von Helmholtz and Heinrich Hertz. The author argues that Wittgenstein's  notion of a "logical space", the precursor of the Stone space, developed out of formal problems in Frege's and Russell's theories of logic, but was then reinterpreted by Wittgenstein on the model of Hertz's Principles of Mechanics. The concluding section considers the relation between the theory of logical space and the notion of a language-game in Wittgenstein's later work, focussing on the relation between type-theory and grammar.

About the Author:

David Hyder is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Ottawa.
