Hardback. Condition: Fine. First Edition. MEDIAEVAL LONDON. Gordon Home in Collaboration with Edward Foord. George H Doran, New York. 1926 First edition 382pp plus fold out map. Illustrated Hardback. This copy has been rebound in blue cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine. There is a small stamp to the foot of the first page of the preface indicating that the book is from the Library of Ricardo A. Caminos. There is some occasional marginalia throughout that may be in Camino's hand. Ricardo Augusto Caminos (c. 1916 - May 28, 1992) was an Argentine Egyptologist focused on epigraphy and paleography. Caminos was born in Buenos Aires with a brother Hugo and sister Helena. As a child he was fascinated by ancient history, and Caminos went on to obtain his undergraduate degree and M.A. (1938) from University of Buenos Aires. After studying for PhD's from both Oxford University and the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute, Chicago, he would go on to work on number of Egyptian and Sudanese excavations, including those about to be flooded by the construction on the Aswan Dam. Around 1952 he was hired by Brown University; in 1972 he would become the chairman of the Egyptology department, retiring in 1980. He then moved to London where he conducted research at the nearby Egypt Exploration Society. London changed a lot during the medieval period. From the 600s to 800s London was located in the west, where Covent Garden is today. At the end of the 800s people moved back into the old Roman town due to increased Viking raids. The old town had the remains of a wall around it and people felt safer there. At this time London's population was about 8,000 people. By 1300 London was both the largest and wealthiest city in England. By the middle of the 1500s it had grown to about 120,000 people and had spread out in all directions outside the old city walls.
