Publisher's dark green cloth with gilt-stamped spine title and front cover illustration of a winged vase wearing eye glasses; same illustrated blind stamped on back cover. Boards have bevelled edges. Top page edges gilt. Black endpapers. Publisher's advertisements for other works by Holmes facing title page. Front fixed endpaper bears engraved bookplate of W. Robert Penman, M.D., and Dorothy I. Lansing, M.D.; bookplate contains verse by Alfred Tennyson and illustration is signed Donn P. Crane. Blank leaf following front free endpaper bears two inscriptions. The first: Presented to Dr. F.A. Belknap By her mother, F.S. Brinton. Lansing, June 15, 1891." The second indicates that W. Robert and Dorothy Penman of Malvern, Pa., acquired the volume at Baldwin's Book Barn in 1964.
