Synopsis:

Healthcare delivery in the 21st century can be very complex. Clinical consultations often raise scientific, ethical and legal challenges. While scientific issues may be resolved using an evidence-based medicine (EBM) approach, ethical theory is needed to justify decision-making in the face of ethical conflict.

About the Author: Keymanthri Moodley is an associate professor in Family Medicine and head of the Bioethics Unit at the Faculty of Health Sciences and Centre for Applied Ethics, University of Stellenbosch. In 2004 she completed her doctorate in philosophy in the field of research ethics, and is responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate bioethics teaching in the faculty. She works as a principal investigator on clinical trials and conducts empirical research in the field of bioethics, including research ethics. The Bioethics Unit provides good clinical practice (GCP) and research ethics training for researchers. Prof. Moodley is a founding member of the Tygerberg Hospital Clinical Ethics Committee, a board member of the South African Medical Research Council (MRC) and has served on the Research Ethics Committee at the faculty for over a decade. She has recently been appointed to the National Health Research Ethics Council (NHREC) by the Ministry of Health and is a member of the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) on HIV Preventive Research in the Division of AIDS, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Washington DC.
