About this Item
Good. Robley Dunglison's influential Medical Lexicon: A New Dictionary of Medical Science, Third Edition (1842), bound in contemporary full leather. An important early American medical reference work containing definitions of medical terminology, French and other synonyms, and formulae for official and empirical preparations. Dunglison, often called the "Father of American Medical Lexicography," was a leading physician, educator, and medical author whose works helped standardize medical education in the United States during the nineteenth century.
Binding is heavily worn with substantial rubbing, scuffing, and loss to the leather, particularly at the spine and corners. The spine label remains partially legible. Text block remains intact and generally sound despite age and use. Pages exhibit foxing, age toning, scattered staining, and evidence of moisture exposure. Front endpapers show staining and wear. A nineteenth-century bookseller's label for J. G. Auner, Bookseller, No. 333 Market Street, Philadelphia is present on the front pastedown, providing an attractive period bookselling provenance.
A substantial and historically significant medical reference from the formative period of American medicine. Dunglison served as professor at Jefferson Medical College and was among the most influential medical educators of his generation. Early editions of his works remain sought after by collectors of medical history, nineteenth-century science, and Philadelphia medical publishing.
