Medical Neuroscience is a new, unique medical neuroscience title that stands alone in the market place. The text is written to serve as the primary textbook for an introductory neuroscience course in medical school. It is also designed to be a key reference for medical students pursuing their neurology rotation. The text is intended to be a viable primary textbook for basic neuroscience courses in neuropsychology, audiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, and it has been class-tested successfully with students in all of these fields. It also provides a useful primer for neurology and neurosurgery residents. Finally, it may be a useful supplement, by virtue of its clinical correlations, in an introductory graduate course in neuroscience. The text emphasizes conceptual and problem solving approaches; this approach appeals to understanding rather than memorization. The fundamental structure of Medical Neuroscience is traditional and systems oriented, but has extensive case material is integrated into the text. The case vignettes are not intended to serve as a means of teaching clinical medicine, and the provision of clinical information and treatment is limited to the minimum necessary to learn the relevant basic science concepts. The clinical information is prominent and the cases in the text and are identified with case numbers. The cases are directly related to the text that surrounds in order to help the reader relate to the information that has been presented.
